What are the Open Education Opportunities for International Students in Turkey?

Turkey has become one of the essential education points for many international students with the severe investments made in higher education. In parallel to the interest of international students in undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate programs, there has also been an increase in the quotas allocated to international students. Students from Asian and African countries prefer Turkey the most. Today, some universities and faculties provide education in foreign languages in almost all geographical regions of Turkey. In addition, international students have started to be accepted to open education faculties, and we can say that the quotas allocated have also increased. This article will talk about some details about open education in Turkey for international students.

Education for International Students in Turkey

As a rule, international students enrolled in any undergraduate, associate, master, doctorate or open education program in Turkey must obtain a student residence permit. With the effect of the Bologna Process, Turkey has become one of the countries preferred by many international students for education. The diplomas received in Turkey due to mutual agreements and collaborations with universities and other educational institutions in many countries of the world are considered internationally valid. In addition, Turkey is one of the leading countries implementing exchange programs under Erasmus. There are also many exchange programs such as Mevlana and Farabi supporting the mobility of students and lecturers in Turkey. In addition, students who will be registered at a university in Turkey must take the YÖS exam, chosen according to the quotas allocated to them, and be placed according to their scores.

Open Education in Turkey

International students who want to apply for the open education program in Turkey can enroll in the Open Education programs, graduate from overseas high schools and equivalent schools and obtain Equivalency Certificate from the National Education Directorates or Consulates. The YÖS requirement to be placed in undergraduate and other programs is not sought in open education faculties. International students who have graduated from a high school or equivalent school in their own country can register directly to open education faculties by obtaining a valid equivalence certificate. While students enrolled in open education faculties continue their education remotely, they are subjected to exams, including two midterm and final exams, from their courses. Graduates of open education faculties can study in the same departments as formal education students, and their diplomas are accepted internationally. The only difference is that "Open Education Faculty" is specified in the faculty part of their diplomas.

Which Degrees are Available at Open Education?

There are open education faculties in some universities in the country, especially Eskişehir Anadolu University and Erzurum Atatürk University. In these universities, which have a wide range of undergraduate and associate degree programs, you can graduate in 4 or 8 terms according to the departments you choose. As a basic rule, while the duration of education in associate degree programs is two years, this period is four years in undergraduate programs. In addition, graduate and doctorate degrees cannot be held in open education faculties in Turkey. While there are thesis and non-thesis programs in master's education, the doctorate program is implemented as formal education.
